Brainy Belly: Grassfed Beef and Pasture-raised Chicken Bone Broths and Soups

We Make Beef Bone Broth

Then Brainy Belly found Jesse Straight of Whiffletree Farm. Jesse is a force, who raises beef, contented chickens and woods-roaming pigs on a beautiful farm near Warrenton, Virginia. He has introduced us to other grass fed passionate farmers in the area and we now have a good supply of beautiful, meaty beef bones. We add organic vegetables and herbs to round out the flavor, simmer it to perfection, then quickly get it packaged, frozen and ready for you.

We pressure cook our broth which is not the traditional recipe. A shorter cook time limits histamines in the final product and also prevents neurotoxic glutamates which can be an issue with long simmered broth. Gelatin content is high and nutritional analysis/ experience shows it to be equally beneficial as a long cooked version. It is strained and rapidly cooled then packaged in heavyweight BPA-free bags and frozen. Online orders are shipped to you in a sustainable shipping sleeve (no styro!) container with dry ice when needed.

Chicken Bone Broth, Too!

Brainy Belly Bone Broth is made with pasture raised chickens, all from less than 100 miles away in Maryland and Pennsylvania. We insist on pasture raised birds because chasing around after bugs all day means their strong bones are packed with gelatin and even better, they taste better. We include heritage breed birds for their unique, rich flavor. Read more about Groff’s Content Farm and D’Artagnan, our valued suppliers, on our website.

And Now, Bone Broth Soups!

We’ve been working for months to source ingredients, refine recipes and test, test, test before being able to announce Comfort Soup, made with Pasture Raised Chicken and Roasted Vegetables and Mighty Soup, filled with flavorful Grass Fed Beef Chuck Roast and meaty shanks as well as a complement of vegetables including artichokes, cremini mushrooms and butternut squash.

Brainy Belly Bone Broth Sauces share the rich flavor of Bone Broth in shelf stable form that is easy to keep and readily available for many uses, including Dipping Sauce, Marinade, Cooking Sauce or Condiment. They are quick and convenient Meal Makers.

Janalee Redmond, Founder of Brainy Belly

My autoimmune issues were a mystery: for me and for many others now suffering from modern illnesses of uncertain origins. Science is catching up with traditional wisdom, learning that the belly is more important than ever imagined. It is not only the food catcher and digester but home to millions of bacteria that have co-evolved with humans, and key to the health and well-being of your body and mind. Much like my beloved Nebraska prairie: not just grass and infrequent scrubby trees but a complex eco-system that has found balance over hundreds and thousands of years. (Yes, I am from Nebraska. Never leaves me.) The brain and the belly have a complex but very much connected relationship. And what occurs with one is very much going to affect the other.

Thanks to eating real, nutrient-dense food, my energy and passion are back and I want to share this restorative tradition. Bone broth is soul-nourishing, rich from bones of animals raised on pasture grass, filled with sun and minerals from the earth. Grass fed, pasture raised animals build bones filled with trace nutrients and collagen-packed gelatin. Collagen is a valued commodity in the body, even more so as we age and it is critical, needed for joints and the connective tissue throughout your body. Bone broth is a powerful source of gelatin/ collagen, its fragrant warmth ready to lift your spirits and heal your body.

"Create. Contribute. Prosper," with these three words, the Union Kitchen Incubator gave shape to my mission of sharing a healing path, of creating health with delicious, real foods. I make bone broth because in the summer of 2012 I broke my stomach. I am recovering, thanks to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which restricts complex carbohydrates and offers structured guidance to heal the gut. Properly made Bone Broth is an essential healing food. Brainy Belly came into being because it was offered Membership in the Union Kitchen Incubator in Washington, DC. I am so pleased to join this passionate community of creators. Food so rules.

When I went looking for bones from grass fed beef for Brainy Belly Beef Bone Broth, I discovered that they were in short supply. “Bones are the new bacon,” said one Virginia rancher. He was sold out of all his beef through the following year. Grass fed beef is understood in Virginia.

Meat from grass-fed animals has two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids than meat from grain-fed animals. Omega-3s are called “good fats” because they play a vital role in every cell and system in your body. For example, of all the fats, they are the most heart-friendly. People who have ample amounts of omega-3s in their diet are less likely to have high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat. Remarkably, they are 50 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack. Omega-3s are essential for your brain as well. People with a diet rich in omega-3s are less likely to suffer from depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder (hyperactivity), or Alzheimer’s disease. (Source: EatWild.com)

Supplier: Dutch Meadow Organics

Supplier for Brainy Belly - Dutch Meadows Organic

Dutch Meadows Organics is located in Paradise, Pennsylvania. They supply us with bones from grass fed beef and pasture raised chickens. I found them via the web so once we were talking about working together, I drove up on a Thursday to talk to Dave Stoltzfus at the PA Dutch Farmers of Wyomissing, where he has a butcher shop market stall. Dave radiates integrity, and his passion for his product is clear. He understood exactly what I was looking for and appreciated my efforts to bring properly made bone broth to market.

The beef displayed in his case is just beautiful; there is really no other word for it. There's little or no of the fat marbling which you usually see proudly displayed by a butcher. Instead the meat is a beautiful fresh color, portions are generous and the prices are fair. And the taste is extraordinary. My family loves these meats and we've changed the minds of several friends who have eaten dinner with us. They felt that they didn't care for grass fed meats, until they tasted a meal from the farmers of Dutch Meadows.

Supplier: D’Artagnan Foods

Poultry and meats from D'Artagnan Foods have for many years been the commodity I sought out for very special meals. If you knew where in Washington DC to shop you could find their delicious chickens, wonderful duck, pate and very special sausages. I considered their Green Circle Chicken to be the very best commercially produced bird available, comparable if not superior to any farm fresh chicken.

When I began producing broth I had the mad idea of calling them, since their tasty birds would make tasty broth. To my great surprise, their sales rep was happy to explain the wonderful options available to me, thanks to their size and processing capability. Their philosophy of raising food animals is completely synonymous with that of Brainy Belly.

"Before such buzz words existed, and for more than 30 years, D’Artagnan has been committed to free-range, natural production and sustainable, humane farming practices.

They are a valuable partner, proudly sharing details of their excellent farming and processing methods as we have pursued certification by The Paleo Foundation and USDA Inspected Production. We are so grateful for their passion and partnership.

Supplier: Groff’s Content Farm

Beautiful Groff's Content Farm represents retirement for Julie and Bob Bolton. I can't imagine what their previous careers looked like because they manage more balls in the air than anyone I've ever met. With delicious results! Thanks to their thoughtful and careful planning for innovative fodder and feed production they raise wonderful animals with great integrity.

"Groff’s Content Farm has been around for over 250 years. It was part of a royal land grant dating back to the 1750s. The farm is still the same 100 acres it was back then, which we find amazing. The name of the farm in 1752 was Groff’s Content. To respect the history of the farm, we chose to stick with the historical name.

"Visitors are always welcome to stop by to pick up meats and eggs. You are also welcome to stop by just to see the farm and say hello. We have an assortment of critters around just for fun. Please come for a visit. We do ask that you schedule your visit in advance seeing as we are usually outside around the farm working or at market." Trust me, they are always working. And we are so grateful to have them as another of our passionate suppliers.

About Us :

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of improving the tolerability of the paleo diet, and to help adherents easily identify products that met its basic tenets.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Keto Certified, and lab -tested Grain-Free Gluten-Free certification programs.

Disclosures:

100% of  Paleo Foundation revenue is generated through certifications.  We do not accept donations, corporate sponsorships, or financially benefit from the sales of any certified products, product giveaways, or partnerships with industry contacts or retailers for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of an impartial certification standard.

Certified Paleo logo Certified Paleo:

Each certification program has a different set of standards.  Certified Paleo is the Paleo Foundation’s first, most popular, and highest level of certification for Paleo-compliant products.  Certified Paleo Products are products that contain Paleo ingredients, but may have some 21st-century processing or packaging methods allowing for shelf stability.

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified LogoGrain-Free Gluten-Free:

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified products are gluten-free and do not contain any grains of gliadin competitive residues.  All Grain-Free Gluten-Free products have undergone two rounds of audits, including lab tests, and a final review to become approved for the Grain-free Gluten-free Certified Program.

Keto Certified LogoKeto Certified:

The ketogenic diet is a restrictive, demanding diet that can be difficult to maintain, and tolerability of the ketogenic diet is the single most important factor limiting individual acceptance for initiation.  Therefore, improving the tolerability of the ketogenic diet is crucial to preventing diet discontinuation, warranting further investigation into methods for improving palatability, improving the availability and convenience of foods that are compliant with the ketogenic diet, as well as addressing cultural and social acceptance.

The Keto Diet product market may be in a unique position to improve tolerability, especially in social and cultural environments that typically feature carbohydrate-rich “special occasion” types of foods. In 2016, the Paleo Foundation launched the world's first Keto Certified program for products with standards that were developed for adherence to a classical ketogenic diet.
