Laura Savinovich, Founder and Head Baker at Snackin' Free

Hi, my name is Laura Savinovich. I am the founder of and head baker at Snackin’ Free, a completely dedicated gluten, grain, dairy, soy and peanut free bakery-cafe in Murrieta, CA. I started on this journey after suffering for several years with pain, weight gain and severe fatigue associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

I come from a family with a long history of Autoimmune Disease; in the last 3 generations all the females, from my mother to my daughter, has some form of Autoimmune Disease ranging from Scleroderma and Pemphigus to Hashimoto’s and Lupus. In 2003 I was diagnosed with moderate Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), and in 2010 I learned about something that would literally change my life, the “Paleo Lifestyle.” I decided to do some extensive research before jumping in with both feet, clearing all the cupboards, and disrupting everyones life; but I soon found that finding tasty foods that adhered to my new strict dietary guidelines proved very difficult so I knew I had to make it myself.

I began by searching through my own family recipes and started scouring the book stores and internet to find recipes that could be transformed into those tasty treats and baked goods I remembered but was unable to find in the stores. After much experimentation, reformulation and manipulation with ingredients that were foreign to me I began to test my creations on family and friends with great results. Now at Snackin’ Free we offer everything from the best paleo breads including pizza crustbagels and tortillassalad dressingsbarbecue sauces, and treats from cookiesmuffinsbrownies, and cupcakes all without containing any gluten, grain, dairy, soy, peanuts, processed sugars or artificial ingredients.

Stop in and enjoy one of our many sandwiches, salads or pizzas made fresh for you while you wait or look us up online and fill your shopping cart there. I started on this path in search of a non-invasive way to improve my own health in my home and I have been able to achieve that goal through food. I now feel very fortunate and privileged to be able to share our food, experiences and knowledge with those like me who are living with strict dietary restrictions.

I wish you all Health and Happiness and hope that you’ll join us at Snackin’ Free and taste the difference. - Laura Savinovich, Founder and Head Baker at Snackin' Free

Are your foods Paleo, GAPS, SCD and Low GI friendly?

Answer: We do our very best to follow the guidelines of the founders of these diets.

Are your foods gluten free and grain free?

Answer: Yes, we use only non glutenous, non grain, non GMO organic flours such as coconut (not a tree nut), tree nut (primarily almond), tapioca, arrowroot and flax.

Are your foods completely dairy-free?

Answer: Yes, we use only coconut milk and almond milk in our foods and baked goods. We do our research and contact each ingredients’ supplier to make sure that any other ingredients we use such as chocolate chips and vegan cheese products are also dairy free. Please remember that eggs are not dairy.

Are your ingredients soy-free?

Answer: Yes, we make sure we contact each company that we purchase ingredients from in order to ensure those ingredients and every product that we make is completely soy free.

Are your products Low GI friendly?

Answer: Yes, though there is some sugar in certain ingredients, such as our chocolate chips, we do our best to use low glycemic sweeteners such as honey, organic coconut sugar, a concentrated pineapple/ pear syrup and organic non GMO birch xylitol. In addition we use low glycemic, high fiber flours such as coconut and almond flour. It is important for each person to check with your doctor or health professional to ensure you are consuming the proper amount of sugars for your health condition and lifestyle.

Why are your products a bit pricier than your standard ingredient competitor?

Answer: In most cases Organic and non GMO ingredients are more expensive even at the wholesale level, we are using non conventional sweeteners and gluten free flours, such as nut and coconut flours, which are higher priced than traditional ones as well. But with the higher price you are getting a quality product that is nutrient dense and made with whole food ingredients.

How can you say you are dairy free if you still use eggs?

Answer: This is a common question. Though eggs are in the dairy case at your local grocery store, eggs are in fact not dairy. Dairy is a product or byproduct of milk. Other things made from milk are things like cheese, butter, ice cream, sour cream and whey protein. We make every effort to ensure that our ingredients and our products do not contain any milk and/ or dairy byproducts.

Why are you only peanut free and not completely nut free?

Answer: We choose to use nuts and nut flours, particularly almond flour in certain baked goods because we do not use any grains or traditional gluten free flours(wheat, corn, oats, rice, teff, sorghum etc) or legumes (beans, peanuts, soy) in our gluten free baking and food making process. Nuts are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. We make sure and are extremely careful not to bake with nut flours at the same time we bake with other flours, we store all nut products separately in sealed containers and make every effort to ensure that cross contamination does not occur.

About Us :

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of improving the tolerability of the paleo diet, and to help adherents easily identify products that met its basic tenets.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Keto Certified, and lab -tested Grain-Free Gluten-Free certification programs.

Disclosures:

100% of  Paleo Foundation revenue is generated through certifications.  We do not accept donations, corporate sponsorships, or financially benefit from the sales of any certified products, product giveaways, or partnerships with industry contacts or retailers for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of an impartial certification standard.

Certified Paleo logo Certified Paleo:

Each certification program has a different set of standards.  Certified Paleo is the Paleo Foundation’s first, most popular, and highest level of certification for Paleo-compliant products.  Certified Paleo Products are products that contain Paleo ingredients, but may have some 21st-century processing or packaging methods allowing for shelf stability.

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified LogoGrain-Free Gluten-Free:

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified products are gluten-free and do not contain any grains of gliadin competitive residues.  All Grain-Free Gluten-Free products have undergone two rounds of audits, including lab tests, and a final review to become approved for the Grain-free Gluten-free Certified Program.

Keto Certified LogoKeto Certified:

The ketogenic diet is a restrictive, demanding diet that can be difficult to maintain, and tolerability of the ketogenic diet is the single most important factor limiting individual acceptance for initiation.  Therefore, improving the tolerability of the ketogenic diet is crucial to preventing diet discontinuation, warranting further investigation into methods for improving palatability, improving the availability and convenience of foods that are compliant with the ketogenic diet, as well as addressing cultural and social acceptance.

The Keto Diet product market may be in a unique position to improve tolerability, especially in social and cultural environments that typically feature carbohydrate-rich “special occasion” types of foods. In 2016, the Paleo Foundation launched the world's first Keto Certified program for products with standards that were developed for adherence to a classical ketogenic diet.
