How do two guys with no prior experience in the alcoholic beverage market plan to change the way you drink?  Introducing COCO Cocktail #REFRESH, the World’s 1st Alcoholic Beverage with Vitamins & Minerals.  The brainchild of Healthy Beverages, LLC Co-Founders Todd Shull and Franz Tudor, #REFRESH is the first alcoholic beverage to include on its label; “A Good Source of Vitamins A, C, D, E, B1 & B6”, Electrolyte Charged with 177mg of potassium per 12oz serving, Gluten Free, Paleo Friendly and made with All Natural Non-GMO Ingredients including SuperFruits Garcinia, Cambogia, and Mangosteen.  Did we mention it also tastes like an adult version of Sprite; light, crisp, refreshing, without all the sugar in Sprite and the added kick of 5.6% alcohol by volume per 12oz sleek can.

The Beginning

Having met in 2003 while working for the same financial research firm in Florida, Mr.’s Shull and Tudor found they shared an interest in health, fitness and nutrition products.  Parting ways to pursue other business interests in 2004, they remained friends and in 2012 were presented the opportunity to work together establishing an ingredient supply company in 2012.  During a discussion with a key supplier, Mr. Tudor came across the opportunity to source a high quality coconut water from India.  The water was crisp and had a superior nutritional profile when compared to the market leaders at the time, but the question was how to bring it to market.  At the time, the retail coconut water market was dominated by Dr. Pepper Snapple, Coke, and Pepsi.  Without a highly differentiated product, it didn’t make sense to go head-to-head with a jungle full of 800 lb. gorillas.  So how to differentiate a commodity product that Mr.’s Shull and Tudor viewed as having significant potential to be a great product in some form?

While conducting further research behind the attributes, science, and potential benefits of coconut water, Mr. Tudor noticed a significant amount of online commentary related to the use of coconut water to curb hangovers.  Having spent time in the Caribbean and both partners being from Florida the memories of drinking rum with fresh coconut water began to resonate.  Why not replenish lost electrolytes while consuming alcohol?  While a logical step, adding alcohol to coconut water was not unique, not enough of a differentiating factor, and provided no barrier to competition in the minds of Shull and Tudor.  Consumers in all food and beverage categories are demanding healthier and all natural options, but not so much in alcohol where light beer and red wine remained the go-to healthier options.  Skinny Girl made a big splash demonstrating the market for healthy alcohol existed, but only focused on the low calorie and low carb aspect with a poor tasting product.  So the discussion began on how to make the world’s first and most nutritious alcoholic beverage. 

About COCO Cocktail #Refresh:

Seeking unique and nutritious ingredients, Mr. Tudor came across a press release from the Girl Scouts of America announcing the launch of  their first healthy cookie.  Curious as to what made the cookie healthy and further reviewing the release, Mr. Tudor discovered NutriFusion and their all natural ingredient GrandFusion.  This would become the source of  the vitamins in COCO Cocktail.  NutriFusion developed and patented a process to grind organic fruits and vegetables into a fine powder while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the fruits.  Now COCO Cocktail would be able to provide consumers with a real food source for key electrolytes and a real food source for vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, & B6, but the envelope could still be pushed further.  Creating flavors incorporating SuperFruits like the Garcinia, Cambogia, and Mangosteen found in #REFRESH could further add to the nutritional benefits.

Wanting to provide this unique product to the broadest consumer base, it was decided that the alcohol source would need to be gluten free.  COCO Cocktail utilizes a wine base known as Other-Than-Standard (OTS) Orange Peel Wine and is 100% Gluten Free.  To provide the right level of sweetness without a negative aftertaste and added calories and carbs was not an easy task.  After testing +10 types of stevia, agave, honey, monk fruit, and many more, evaporated cane juice was the winner providing the right balance of sweetness, no aftertaste, and a manageable level of carbs.  Finding the proper level of sweetness by itself is a difficult task as consumer taste buds have a high degree of variance and preference, but incorporating the need to reduce calories and carbs only increases the challenge.  #REFRESH is only 116 calories and 14g of total carbs per 12oz serving with 4g of the carbs directly attributed to the coconut water.

Mr.’s Shull and Tudor wanted to continue to raise the bar for the alcohol industry by providing the highest level of transparency and quality control.  The level of laboratory testing preformed on COCO Cocktail #REFRESH and publishing of the results for consumers evaluation has never been completed by even the largest of alcohol manufacturers.  All nutritional analysis, Non-GMO testing, and Paleo Friendly certifications were conducted by licensed, independent 3rd party laboratories and agencies.  Product packaging clearly identifies all ingredients utilized in the manufacturing of COCO Cocktail #REFRESH and nutritional values, what you read is what you are getting with each refreshing sip.  Healthy Beverages is planning the launch of two to three additional flavors throughout 2017.  Cheers & To Your Health!
