Milton’s Local

Milton’s Local is a proud provider of all-natural meat. We are named in honor of Milton Faison, a second generation farmer, and grandfather of our founder, M. James Faison. Our mission is to support sustainable agriculture by creating wholesale channels for family farmers.

It began with a farm and a passion for sustainable agriculture before it was cool. Throughout his life, Grandpa Milton was committed to healthy food, a healthy environment, and a healthy community. It’s these values that guide this company that bears his name. As a fourth generation farmer, James grew up among small, independent farm families in rural Virginia.

From barns to boardrooms, his days in Emporia, Virginia stuck with him during his education at Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of Law, and his tenure as a corporate attorney. It wasn’t until he inherited the family farm that he headed his calling to return to agriculture.

Grandpa Milton’s values continue to inspire the work that we do every day. His passion for sustainability and quality are the same principles upon which we have built our company.  We only source “clean meat” free of antibiotics, hormones, and steroids. Our all-natural meat does not contain any MSG or artificial nitrates or nitrites. We’re proud of the choices we make, and you should be too!

Milton’s Local: Hand-crafted Artisan Meats:

We take our bacon seriously, which is why we never take shortcuts. For starters, our all-natural, thick cut bacon is hickory smoked for over 8 hours. We never use artificial nitrates or nitrites, and our pork is raised humanely, without the use of hormones, antibiotics or steroids.

Better sausage requires higher quality ingredients. That’s why we start with pork that’s raised naturally without the use of hormones, antibiotics or steroids, with minimal processing. Add in our careful blend of herbs and spices, and well, that’s a flavorful sausage you can feel good about.

Our Bell Pepper & Onion Bacon Sausage is our original Bacon Sausage, packed with the fresh, crisp flavors of bell peppers and aromatic onions to contrast our savory, hickory smoked bacon.

Our award-winning Chipotle & Cilantro Bacon Sausage has a mild spice and great smoky flavor that perfectly complements the flavor of our hickory smoked bacon.

There is no such thing as a typical day for M. James Faison. At any given time, you can find the founder and president of Milton’s Local touring a hog farm, discussing cuts of meat with area chefs or spreading the gospel of pork throughout the region. He’s come a long way from practicing corporate law in Miami, but life now is no less hectic; he’s abandoned the briefcase in favor of his grandad’s old Dodge Dakota, where Faison says he gets most of his work done. That job is connecting livestock farmers with chefs and grocers looking for high-quality pork and beef from Virginia and North Carolina — an uncommon business plan inspired by companies such as Applegate Farm in New Jersey.

According to the National Pork Board, Faison’s is the only company in Virginia using this model: Not only does Faison’s company sell its own award-winning line of bacon and sausage; it seeks out small, family-run farms, and brokers business arrangements that benefit both the farm and the restaurant.

For seventh-generation Orange County farmer Tom “Papa” Weaver, working with Milton’s Local is a means of survival in a competitive market. “We don’t have the time to farm, take care of the pigs and do the marketing,” explains Weaver, who manages all 650 acres of his Papa Weaver’s Pork farm with the help of his two children and father-in-law. “[Milton’s Local] allows me to do a better job taking care of my pigs and making sure I have product to sell.”

Helping farmers like Weaver get their products to market is central to the mission of Faison’s company: “Our idea is that, in order to encourage farmers to be sustainable, they must make more money than from conventional [means of selling product],” Faison says. “If our farmers don’t make more money working with us, there’s less reason for us to exist.”

About Us :

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of helping Paleo Diet Adherents easily identify products that met the basic tenets of the diet.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Paleo Approved, Paleo Vegan, and Paleo Friendly Certification Programs.

100% of  Paleo Foundation revenue is generated through Paleo Certifications. We do not accept donations, corporate sponsorships, or financially benefit from the sales of any paleo certified products, product giveaways, or partnerships with industry contacts or retailers for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of an impartial certification standard.

How we determine Paleo Certification Standards:

The Paleo Foundation develops Certification Standards from a mixture of input from various experts in the Paleo Movement, community input, and from logically and critically assessing arguments for the inclusion or exclusion of specific foods. After all, the Paleo Diet is a theoretical template, and therefore logic must be taken into account when making determinations for an entire community.

Paleo Approved, Certified Paleo, Paleo Friendly, and PaleoVegan Certification Programs:

Each Paleo Certification Program has a different set of standards. For the absolute strictest standards, Paleo Approved certifies farms, ranches, and single-ingredient products. Certified Paleo, the most popular of the Paleo Certification programs certifies products that contain Paleo Diet ingredients, but have some 21st century processing methods allowing for shelf stability. The Paleo Friendly Program allows for products that are generally regarded as gray-area products such as kombucha, dark chocolate, and even grass-fed dairy.
