Swapples: Waffle Reinvented

Swapples® are waffles made with whole fruits, veggies and spices. No seriously. That’s it! We reinvented waffles by ‘swapping’ out processed sugars, thickeners and refined flours for 6 real-food ingredients or less (hence, ‘Swapples’ – clever, right?!) Whether you’ve gotta dress them up for the perfect Instagram shot or swear by the ‘wrap-it-in-a-paper-towel-and-go’ philosophy, Swapples are the waffles you can eat any time of day. Because you always deserve more fruits and veggies.

Rebecca Peress, Founder, CEO

Swapples was founded by CEO Rebecca Peress in October 2015. Operating in the nation’s capital, the company continues to grow the Swapples® brand throughout the mid-Atlantic region, with plans to share them nationally.

Our mission at Swapples is to get people eating more food, less junk, by providing them with a product that substitutes processed grains, refined sugars and thickeners for whole fruits and vegetables.

On a cool September day in 2015, our founder, Rebecca Peress, just really, really, wanted some bread. But in light of several autoimmune disorders, she was unable to eat grains. She yearned for something to smash some avocado on, spread some coconut oil on, dip in soups… but there was nothing on the market to satisfy her desire for the crispy-soft texture of a piece of toast or a fresh roll. Sure, there were a bunch of recipes on the blogosphere for almond-based this and egg-based that, but with several allergies, she couldn’t enjoy them. And she was annoyed.

Committed to eating 8-10 servings of veggies a day, Rebecca was determined to create a bread-like product out of vegetables, that was also flavorful and allergen-free. And while messing around in her kitchen with yuca root and her waffle iron – what we know today as Swapples, were born! Co-workers, family, and friends quickly became customers, and were amazed at how great they felt after eating them. Her own father lost 60 lbs in 10 months after ‘swapping’ all of his grain-based products for them! Happy to see the ones she loved feeling the same benefits of a real food diet as she did, Rebecca quit her desk job, dubbed the waffles ‘Swapples®’ and set out to share them with as many people as possible. Today, she continues to pursue her mission of people with an easier way to eat more food, and less junk, and to think creatively about eating more fruits and vegetables.

What’s the best way to prepare my Swapple?

Answer: Swapples taste best when they are toasted, microwave only is not recommended. If toasting straight from frozen, toast at 375F or highest setting for 10-12 minutes, until a light golden color is achieved. Alternatively, you can microwave first for 1 minute on high to thaw, then transfer to a toaster and toast for 3-5 minutes until a light golden color is achieved.

What’s yuca root and what’s so great about it?

Answer: All Swapples are made from yuca root, an easily digestible root vegetable indigenous to tropical climates. A dietary staple in other parts of the world, it is known for being a good source of fiber, folate, vitamin C, and potassium. Some studies suggest that it can even aid diabetes treatment, as it can moderately reduce glucose levels and regulate metabolic disturbances.

Do your flavors have added sugar?

Answer: Our 3 savory flavors, Everything, Garlicky Greens, and Tomato Pizza, have no added sugars; the only sugar in them are those naturally occurring from the vegetables themselves. Blueberry and Cinnamon have only 1 teaspoon of organic coconut palm sugar in each waffle, which is a natural sweetener derived from the meat of the coconut; most of the sweetness comes from whole blueberries and real cinnamon, respectively.

Can I store them in the refrigerator?

Answer: Swapples must be kept frozen at all times. You may transfer them to the refrigerator to thaw, but they must be consumed in 1-2 days, as they are fresh and do not contain preservatives. ONCE THAWED, DO NOT REFREEZE.

About Us :

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of improving the tolerability of the paleo diet, and to help adherents easily identify products that met its basic tenets.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Keto Certified, and lab -tested Grain-Free Gluten-Free certification programs.

100% of  Paleo Foundation revenue is generated through certifications.  We do not accept donations, corporate sponsorships, or financially benefit from the sales of any certified products, product giveaways, or partnerships with industry contacts or retailers for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of an impartial certification standard.

Certified Paleo logo Certified Paleo:

Each certification program has a different set of standards.  Certified Paleo is the Paleo Foundation’s first, most popular, and highest level of certification for Paleo-compliant products.  Certified Paleo Products are products that contain Paleo ingredients, but may have some 21st-century processing or packaging methods allowing for shelf stability.

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified LogoGrain-Free Gluten-Free:

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified products are gluten-free and do not contain any grains of gliadin competitive residues.  All Grain-Free Gluten-Free products have undergone two rounds of audits, including lab tests, and a final review to become approved for the Grain-free Gluten-free Certified Program.

Keto Certified LogoKeto Certified:

The ketogenic diet is a restrictive, demanding diet that can be difficult to maintain, and tolerability of the ketogenic diet is the single most important factor limiting individual acceptance for initiation.  Therefore, improving the tolerability of the ketogenic diet is crucial to preventing diet discontinuation, warranting further investigation into methods for improving palatability, improving the availability and convenience of foods that are compliant with the ketogenic diet, as well as addressing cultural and social acceptance.

The Keto Diet product market may be in a unique position to improve tolerability, especially in social and cultural environments that typically feature carbohydrate-rich “special occasion” types of foods. In 2016, the Paleo Foundation launched the world's first Keto Certified program for products with standards that were developed for adherence to a classical ketogenic diet.
