Our Story

As a father of four and a healthy eater, I tried to limit my kids' ketchup intake, explaining it was like putting candy on their burgers. Part of me cringed at family cookouts as BBQ sauce and Sriracha flowed freely. But I lost these battles - especially the argument over ketchup with a five year old. So when the opportunity arose to create a better ketchup, I jumped.

True Made Foods Naturally Sweetened with Vegetables

We had always used vegetables, like carrots and squash, to naturally sweeten other dishes we cook so I knew it could work for ketchup as well. It did, and True Made Foods was born. True Made Foods brings real flavor to every meal by naturally sweetening our products with vegetables, turning these once empty calorie American staples into nutrient dense, plant-based super foods.

Abraham (Abe) Kamarck, CEO & Founder

Abe was born in Washington DC and grew up in Virginia, Brooklyn and Maryland before attending Vanderbilt on an NROTC scholarship. After graduation, he served eight years as a Navy Helicopter pilot, deploying on counter-narcotics missions and for OIF. He spent his last tour in England where Abe earned his MBA from the London Business School and was introduced to impact entrepreneurship. This experience prompted Abe to leave the Navy and start a seven year adventure in emerging markets as an impact entrepreneur. He spent time in Bulgaria, Ghana, Egypt and China and even lived with his family in Qatar for three years. A sucker for challenges, Abe worked in difficult environments on "wicked" problems like migrant worker housing and funding startups in the Middle East. Along the way, he launched various ventures from fun websites like to more difficult ones like building greenhouse farms in the desert. In 2013, Abe returned to the DC area and was hired by the Coexist Foundation to develop and launch Coexist Coffee. Launching the coffee taught Abe the food business and married his two biggest passions - food and entrepreneurship. Raised on a mix of Southern Italian and Southern Virginian culinary traditions, Abe is an avid cook and self-proclaimed grill master. A father of four, he is passionate about real food, healthy lifestyles, playing rugby and coaching his kids' football and basketball.

BBQ Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potato Skins Mini Turkey Meatloaves True Made "Sloppy Joe's"

Where are the sauces produced?

Answer: Currently we make our products in Louisville, KY.

Where is the company based?

Answer: We are based in Alexandria, VA.

How much of the sauces are actually made from vegetables?

Answer: Each bottle is about 20% pureed spinach, carrots and butternut squash by total ingredient weight.

Are your products gluten free?

Answer: Yes. All our products have been lab tested for gluten. See our Lab Results Here. Our current labels don’t say “Gluten Free” because we thought it was obvious based on our ingredients. That was our mistake. Our new label iteration will have the Gluten Free Seal.

Are your products non-gmo?

Answer: Yes. Our tomatoes have been tested for GMO markers by the same lab the Non-GMO Project uses. We also have statements from our suppliers stating that our other ingredients are non-gmo. Typically ketchup, BBQ sauce and hot sauces are not at risk of being GMO products.

Are you products vegan?

Answer: Yes. 100% vegan. And we are certified Paleo Vegan.

Are your products paleo?

Answer: Yes. Our Ketchup and BBQ Sauce are Certified Paleo Friendly and our Veracha – Vegetable Sriracha – is Paleo Certified. All three are certified by the Paleo Foundation.

How can your ketchup & bbq sauce be paleo if they contain cane sugar?

Answer: Our Ketchup & BBQ Sauce are certified “Paleo Friendly,” NOT “Paleo.” The Paleo Friendly program allows for some sugars and sweeteners to be used in products that would otherwise be considered Paleo or that are as close to Paleo as possible for their category.

Are your products organic?

Answer: Unfortunately, no. Organic vegetables, especially, organic tomatoes are very expensive and difficult to procure for a small company like ours. We will be pursuing organic ingredients as we grow, so support us now and help us grow to be organic!

How do the products compare to other brands?

Answer: True Made Vegetable Ketchup has 2 only 2 grams of added sugar. All the leading brands, e.g. Heinz, Simply Heinz, Annie’s, Muir Glen, Woodstock and Wild Oats have 4 grams of sugar per serving. So True Made Foods has half the sugar of these other brands. We are also the only ketchup with potassium, Vitamin E and Vitamin K in every serving. True Made Foods Vegetable BBQ Sauce is the lowest calorie BBQ Sauce on the market (35 calories per serving) and has less than half the sugar of Sweet Baby Ray’s (the leading BBQ Sauce). One gram of sugar on the nutrition label also comes from the vegetables. Unlike most BBQ Sauces, True Made Foods has a short, clean ingredient label and a large nutrition label. No other BBQ sauce has Vitamin C, E, B6, Potassium, Protein and Iron. Original Veracha – Vegetable Sriracha has ZERO added sugar and is Paleo Certified. Veracha was ranked the 2nd healthiest hot sauce by Not many vitamins and minerals show up on the nutrition label, because of the small serving size (1x Teaspoon), but Veracha is an almost 100% vegetable based product and is packed with nutrition and superfoods. Traditional Sriracha, on the other hand, has no nutritional value, is packed with sugar (2nd ingredient) and a lot of non-natural ingredients (e.g. potassium sorbate, sodium bisulfite and xanthan gum).

Do you use ugly vegetables?

Answer: 100% of our carrots and butternut squash can be considered “ugly” vegetables. The farmers we buy them from, puree their undersized and ugly vegetables valuable creating extra income streams for these vegetable farmers and reducing food waste.

Where do the vegetables come from?

Answer: The tomatoes (tomato paste) come from California. Our butternut squash and carrots come from farms in Eastern North Carolina. Our Spinach comes from a family farm in Oregon. Our jalapeño peppers come from New Mexico. We are truly a 100% American Brand.

Do I need to refrigerate ketchup?

Answer: Because of their natural acidity, all our products are shelf-stable. However, stability after opening can be affected by storage conditions. Though our Ketchup has been lab tested and proven to be safe after 40 days open at room temperature, we recommend that our products, like most natural food, be refrigerated after opening. Refrigeration will maintain the best product quality after opening.

What is the shelf life of an unopened bottle of ketchup?

Answer: 24 months from production. Look for the “best by” on the cap or shoulder of the bottle.

The ketchup is looking brown / turning brown? Is it still ok?

Answer: Yes! This is totally normal and safe. Tomato products usually turn brown naturally over time (it even happens to Heinz), our products brown a little faster because we’re moe natural and don’t have corn syrup as an ingredient. The color change does not mean the product has gone bad and doesn’t affect the flavor.

The sauce is caking around the neck of the bottle. Is that safe?

Answer: Yes! Totally normal and hard to avoid with glass bottles. The same problem used to occur with Heinz glass bottles. Our products are high acid products thanks to the tomatoes and vinegar, so this dried product won’t get contaminated and is likely very safe especially if it’s refrigerated after opening. To clean simply wipe the neck of the bottle with a wet towel or napkin.

When was true made foods started?

Answer: True Made Foods was started as an idea in April 2015 when the founders were accepted into Food-X, a food business accelerator in NYC. The products first launched in July 2015 at the Summer Fancy Food Show.

Are you veteran owned and operated?

Answer: Yes. 100%. True Made Foods was founded by two veterans and is still majority owned and operated by its CEO, Abe Kamarck, who served eight years as a Navy Helicopter Pilot. Abe deployed on the USS Yorktown to South America in support of counter-narcotics operations and then to the Arabian Gulf on the USS Gettysburg with the USS Enterprise Strike Group for Operation Iraqi Freedom. His last assignment was in the United Kingdom where he worked in Counter-Terrorism Analysis for the US European Command.

About Us :

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of improving the tolerability of the paleo diet, and to help adherents easily identify products that met its basic tenets.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Keto Certified, and lab -tested Grain-Free Gluten-Free certification programs.

100% of  Paleo Foundation revenue is generated through certifications.  We do not accept donations, corporate sponsorships, or financially benefit from the sales of any certified products, product giveaways, or partnerships with industry contacts or retailers for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of an impartial certification standard.

Certified Paleo logo Certified Paleo:

Each certification program has a different set of standards.  Certified Paleo is the Paleo Foundation’s first, most popular, and highest level of certification for Paleo-compliant products.  Certified Paleo Products are products that contain Paleo ingredients, but may have some 21st-century processing or packaging methods allowing for shelf stability.

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified LogoGrain-Free Gluten-Free:

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified products are gluten-free and do not contain any grains of gliadin competitive residues.  All Grain-Free Gluten-Free products have undergone two rounds of audits, including lab tests, and a final review to become approved for the Grain-free Gluten-free Certified Program.

Keto Certified LogoKeto Certified:

The ketogenic diet is a restrictive, demanding diet that can be difficult to maintain, and tolerability of the ketogenic diet is the single most important factor limiting individual acceptance for initiation.  Therefore, improving the tolerability of the ketogenic diet is crucial to preventing diet discontinuation, warranting further investigation into methods for improving palatability, improving the availability and convenience of foods that are compliant with the ketogenic diet, as well as addressing cultural and social acceptance.

The Keto Diet product market may be in a unique position to improve tolerability, especially in social and cultural environments that typically feature carbohydrate-rich “special occasion” types of foods. In 2016, the Paleo Foundation launched the world's first Keto Certified program for products with standards that were developed for adherence to a classical ketogenic diet.
