Chosen Foods

Chosen Foods was founded by a well traveled Naturopathic Doctor who discovered the powerful effect traditional foods were having in their native cultures. He was inspired to share these ancient superfoods with the rest of the world – and so our journey began.

His vision centered around the idea that food should nourish and sustain our bodies, our lives and our communities.

A few years, some big changes and several products later, our integrity and core values remain the same. The mission of Chosen Foods is to support true nourishment through the rediscovery and accessibility of real food.

At a time when food is often fast and convenient, we encourage people to slow down. We want to inspire folks to get in the kitchen and put real food back on the table. We believe the act of cooking and the time spent around the dinner table should be savored.

Chosen Foods Products include:

Certified Paleo & KETO Certified:

100% Pure Avocado Oil

Grown slowly on non-GMO farms in central Mexico, our hass avocados are nourished with fresh water, sunshine and a whole lotta love. Once ripened, they are hand-harvested, pressed and naturally refined, resulting in a product that’s as beautiful as it is versatile. We aimed to create a cooking oil that is naturally delicious, healthy and shelf-stable without the addition of unnecessary chemicals… and that’s exactly what we’ve done.

Chosen Foods Avocado Oil is only ever made with 100% pure hass avocados – nothing else. Drizzle over salads, meats and vegetables and you’re sure to taste the difference. You’ll also be amazed to know that our avocado oil has a smoke point of 500 F (crazy, right?), making it safe to stir-fry, bake or broil. Never again worry about your cooking oil breaking down and imparting a foul odor. This one can really take the heat!

There’s more. By making the swap to a healthier, better tasting product, you’re supporting a positive, eco-friendly movement. Each and every product we sell is backed by our non-GMO commitment, and promotes the creation and maintenance of certified Non-GMO land.

Avocado Oil Spray

We aimed to create a sprayable cooking oil that is naturally delicious, healthy, and shelf-stable without additives or propellants… and that’s exactly what we’ve done.

Coconut Oil Spray

Coconut oil has been used for centuries for everything from cooking to skin care. We think it’s time this special oil got a new look. That’s why created our expeller-pressed Coconut Oil Spray. Using only air pressure, we’ve eliminated the need for propellants commonly found in other products.

For the first time, quickly and evenly add coconut oil to your food in a natural way. It also makes an excellent addition to your beauty routine as a skin moisturizer, hair mask, or gentle makeup remover.

Coconut Oil Mayo

Avocados might be our main squeeze, but we have a thing on the side with coconut oil. When it’s whipped together with cage-free organic eggs, sugar and vinegar, the result is a deliciously creamy mayo that’s irresistible.

Our Avocado Oil

Did you know that every bottle of Chosen Foods Avocado Oil is meticulously tested for quality before reaching your home? Our industry leading oil verification test measures the fatty acid profile and nutrient density to ensure your avocado oil is pure and fresh.

Every Chosen Foods avocado starts out as small sprout, planted in pristine groves in Michoacán Mexico.

Avocados grown in the perfect climate and elevation of Central Mexico are naturally irrigated by rainfall, saving thousands of gallons of water every year compared to avocados grown in California.

After the avocados are grown, they are sorted and cleaned. The seed and skin of the avocados are then separated from the pulp and expeller pressed to create a highly aromatic and flavorful virgin avocado oil.

To preserve shelf life and create a mild flavor, the virgin oil is then naturally refined to remove chlorophyll, waxes, and sediments. Chosen Foods’ unique, gentle refinement system preserves the Vitamin E and antioxidant Beta-sitosterol of virgin avocado oil while creating a mild flavor well suited for everyday cooking.

Does refining the avocado oil remove nutrients?

Answer: Purity and quality are paramount to everything that we do. Through our all natural refinement process, we can protect many of the nutrients while allowing for a higher smoke point, a milder flavor, and an excellent versatile culinary oil. Unfortunately, many companies that produce avocado oils in the U.S. use chemicals in their process and therefore strip the oil of nutrients and sterols that are important to the benefits of avocado oil. Our low heat purification uses a steam method that protects the nutrients while removing the rest of the impurities including naturally occurring waxes, free fatty acids, and the prominent avocado flavor.

Do you use any harmful chemicals in your refining process?

Answer: We do not use any harmful chemicals in our natural refining process. We use diatomaceous earth to filter out the naturally occurring waxes and gums that you find in unrefined avocado oil. We also use a low heat steam vaporization at a safe temperature that never exceeds 350*F, which removes the rest of the impurities left in the oil.

Does the refining process remove nutrients as well as impurities?

Answer: The steam method protects nutrients and results in a beta-sitosterol content that is only 1.4% lower than virgin avocado oil.

What kind of avocados do you use and where do your avocados come from?

Answer: Our avocado oil is made with Hass avocados from both Mexico and Kenya. Our avocados are harvested primarily in Mexico and we have a small processing facility in Kenya. When we use avocados from Kenya, we indicate ‘Kenya’ on the bottle.

What is the actual refining process?

Answer: Our avocados from Mexico and Kenya are first sorted for quality. Some are set aside to ripen while others are designated for virgin avocado oil or natural refining. The avocados reserved for the refining process are cold-pressed and malaxed in a closed mixing chamber. This allows maximum extraction of oil and nutrients, without exposing the oil to air, which accelerates oxidation. We filter the oil and then filter it once again. The initial filtration leaves us with our crude, cold-pressed avocado oil. The crude avocado oil goes through yet another filtering stage using diatomaceous earth. It is 100% natural and filters out waxes, gums and color. The filtered oil undergoes a low heat purification process. It is heated to a maximum of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which removes the rest of the impurities left in the oil while protecting the nutrients.

Is your avocado oil produced in a facility with peanuts, gluten, or other allergens?

Answer: Our avocado oil has its own production facility which means it never encounters peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, sesame seeds, or other common allergens and is 100% gluten free. We take great care to make sure it is allergen free and that there is never a chance for cross-contamination.

Where do you produce your avocado oil?

Answer: Our avocado oil is produced in our state-of-the-art, 10,000 square foot facility in Michoacan, Mexico. We use the avocado waste as biomass fuel to power our processing plant. By utilizing food waste in a productive way, we have been able to reduce our energy consumption by 7,425 Gigacalories/year – roughly the same amount of energy required to power 1,200 US homes for an entire year!

Where can I find the expiration date on the 100% Avocado Oil?

Answer: Our expiration date is in one of two places, depending on the bottle/lot that you purchased: In green raised letters in a green square underneath the nutrition fact panel. We use ‘CAD’ - the Spanish acronym for expiration date. For example, it will read CAD 031617; which means March 16, 2017. Etched onto the glass under the nutrition fact panel. Hold the bottle up to the light and the etched writing will be visible. It will say “Best by” or “CAD” and the date.

Why isn’t your avocado oil organic?

Answer: We use over 30 million avocados per month and there are not enough certified organic avocados to meet our needs. The good news: Our avocado oil is Verified Non-GMO and Certified Glyphosate Residue Free! Avocados are #1 on the Environmental Working Group’s list of safe non-organic produce known as the "Clean 15". Avocados have a protective skin and are grown high off the ground, making them naturally resistant to insects. Pesticides and herbicides are unnecessary in the growth of avocados. We periodically test our oil to be sure of purity. In order to ship our avocado oil internationally, it must pass stringent tests. For international trade, we test for hundreds of chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides to make sure our oil is clean.

Does avocado oil need to be refrigerated?

Established in 2010, The Paleo Foundation was first organized for the purpose of improving the tolerability of the paleo diet, and to help adherents easily identify products that met its basic tenets.  Since then, thousands of products have been certified through the Certified Paleo, Keto Certified, and lab -tested Grain-Free Gluten-Free certification programs.

Certified Paleo logo Certified Paleo:

Each certification program has a different set of standards.  Certified Paleo is the Paleo Foundation’s first, most popular, and highest level of certification for Paleo-compliant products.  Certified Paleo Products are products that contain Paleo ingredients, but may have some 21st-century processing or packaging methods allowing for shelf stability.

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified LogoGrain-Free Gluten-Free:

Grain Free Gluten Free Certified products are gluten-free and do not contain any grains of gliadin competitive residues.  All Grain-Free Gluten-Free products have undergone two rounds of audits, including lab tests, and a final review to become approved for the Grain-free Gluten-free Certified Program.

Keto Certified LogoKeto Certified:

The ketogenic diet is a restrictive, demanding diet that can be difficult to maintain, and tolerability of the ketogenic diet is the single most important factor limiting individual acceptance for initiation.  Therefore, improving the tolerability of the ketogenic diet is crucial to preventing diet discontinuation, warranting further investigation into methods for improving palatability, improving the availability and convenience of foods that are compliant with the ketogenic diet, as well as addressing cultural and social acceptance.

The Keto Diet product market may be in a unique position to improve tolerability, especially in social and cultural environments that typically feature carbohydrate-rich “special occasion” types of foods. In 2016, the Paleo Foundation launched the world's first Keto Certified program for products with standards that were developed for adherence to a classical ketogenic diet.
