Stevia is a species of herbs found in the sunflower family. Its origins trace back to tropical and subtropical regions from South America and parts of Asia. Stevia Rebaudiana, the sweetest stevia species, has been harvested for centuries for its sugar-like taste. In the early 1970′s, Japan began cultivating stevia in an effort to reduce consumption of cyclamate and saccharin, known carcinogens. Stevia received approval by the FDA as a food additive in the United States in 2008 and has received GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) designation. At maturity, the shrub grows to about three feet tall. Stevia has a sweet taste that is around 300x sweeter than sugar, so only a small amount is needed to sweeten. Stevia is a sugar-free alternative to sweetening your favorite foods and beverages as it does not increase blood sugar levels and is considered to be zero calories.

Stevia is widely used as a sweetener around the world and has no effect on either blood sugar levels or glucose response making it safe for diabetics.

Over 90% of the stevia grown worldwide, is grown in China. Pyure sources stevia and erythritol from USDA Organic Certified and non-GMO Project Verified crops. Pyure routinely conducts audits via facility visits where suppliers, ingredients and protocols are examined. Pyure received SQF (Safe Quality Food) level 3 Certification, the highest possible designation to ensure safety, quality and ethical sourcing that you can trust. Pyure Stevia leaves are harvested from USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified crops, dried and then steeped in water, similar to steeping of tea. The liquid is filtered and separated from the plant material, then the extract is purified and dried to obtain high purity stevia leaf extract.

Due to the intense sweetness of Reb A (250 to 350 times the sweetness of sugar), only a small amount of stevia is needed. To combat the airborne nature of stevia extract, we blend Organic Stevia with other diabetic-friendly, low glycemic sweeteners like Organic Erythritol and Organic Agave Inulin Fiber. These ingredients when paired together balance out the bitter flavors associated with stevia, while making the product more user-friendly when substituting stevia for sugar in recipes.

Pyure Organic Erythritol is a sugar-alcohol that is derived from Non-GMO corn through the process of fermentation. Organic Erythritol is non-nutritive (meaning it provides no nutritional benefits) and digests very quickly through the body, leaving little to no effects on blood sugar levels. Organic Erythritol is found naturally in many foods and beverages like grapes, pears, mushrooms, wine and yogurt. Pyure was the first-to-market with USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified Erythritol. Pyure conducts DNA testing throughout the supply chain to verify that only non-GMO corn is used in the production of Pyure Organic Erythritol.
